Calli Moore

Calli Moore

Calli Moore is an American painter currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. Moore was born and raised in Iowa. Moore received her BFA from the University of Iowa in 2014 and her MFA from American University, Washington, D.C., in 2016. Moore has exhibited work with notable galleries such as Gaa Gallery, Harper’s, Library Street Collective, and Louis Buhl, among others. Through her luminous and rich flora and abstract compositions, Moore presents a reflective and transcendent experience of the natural world. Interested in the intersection of metaphysics, spirituality, and the sciences, Moore credits the subconscious mind as the ultimate inspiration behind her works. Symmetry frequently emerges in Moore’s paintings, evoking a sense of harmony and balance. The artist naturally gravitates towards this quality in her work due to the belief that such uniformity fosters personal alignment with the laws of the universe.

Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: What does growth mean to you?

Calli Moore: For me, growth is maintaining a curiosity towards the things that are not understood coupled with the willingness to learn and expand one’s mind. Growth is actively working towards bettering oneself. Growth is the product of choosing to continuously evolve.

Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: What role does art play in society, and how does your work contribute to that?

Calli Moore: Art is a conduit for one to express and experience feelings and emotions that can otherwise, be undefinable through any other form. The creativity through art is an avenue to demonstrate the human condition and for others to partake in that expression by experiencing the work through all the senses. Art is a universal connector and can bring people together by provoking thought, revealing new perspectives, and showcasing the natural beauty of the universe which surpasses human expression. The work I make is channeled from the subconscious, and the paintings created from that process reflect the natural world and cosmos. By creating paintings that honor the beauty of our universe, I produce a means for the viewer to have a unique encounter with the painting to reflect their own personal understanding and experiences.

Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: How do you see your artwork fitting into the larger art world or art history?

Calli Moore: I believe my work fits within the abstract and spiritual movement currently happening that is directly connected to and influenced by the work of Agnes Pelton, Hilma af Klint, and other powerful female esoteric painters.

Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Calli Moore: I would tell my younger self not to stress about what my peers are doing or compare my trajectory to theirs. We are all on separate paths, and there is no one way to achieve success and goals.

Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: If you had to describe your work in only three words, what would they be?

Calli Moore: Ethereal, spiritual, sublime.
