Collect Bean: What does growth mean to you?
Mackenzie Hyde: Improving from what you’ve experienced up until this point.
Collect Bean: What does an ideal day in your studio look like?
Mackenzie Hyde: When a painting seems like it just made itself while I spent most of the time thinking about what I should have for dinner.
Collect Bean: Where are you currently finding inspiration?
Mackenzie Hyde: Anything that feels like a glitch in everyday life. Recently I saw a guy break away from his group of friends at the park, do a hand stand twice, rejoin his friends and they didn’t acknowledge it whatsoever. That’s the best.
Collect Bean: How does where you grew up influence your work?
Mackenzie Hyde: The Pacific Northwest is mostly just variations of blue, green and grey, those colors have always been my favorite in painting.
Collect Bean: If you could be in a show with any artist, who would it be and why?
Mackenzie Hyde: Kaye Donachie. Even when I made work that didn’t remotely resemble hers whatsoever I’d pick her. She’s the best, it would be the third tier of the mind blown meme for me if someone floated that opportunity my way.
Collect Bean: What is the kindest thing someone can tell you about your work?
Mackenzie Hyde: If they spare a second to say anything about your work then that’s great. After the first 3 or 4 years of painting you usually talk about anything but the work. Like debating the best bagel place in the neighborhood which honestly is just as good.
