Jill Winnie Moser
Jill Winnie Moser received her BFA at the Zurich University of the Arts and is currently based in Berlin, Germany. Her practice serves as a visual exploration of the interplay between consumerism, artificial intelligence, and the nature of desire. Drawing from a blend of critical theories on capitalism, commodity fetishism, and pop-cultural elements, she aims to question the societal constructs that govern our materialistic pursuits. Her work uses AI-generated imagery as reference material to explore the emotive power of brand experiences and the allure of the painted non-existent products. Highlighted is the tension between reality and illusion in an increasingly digitalized world.
Collect Bean: What does growth mean to you?
Jill Winnie Moser: To reflect on past mistakes and the lessons they hold. Growth means trying to fulfill one’s innermost desires and, with that, evolve into a more authentic self.
Collect Bean: What does an ideal day in your studio look like?
Jill Winnie Moser: It really doesn’t take much for it to be “ideal.” I am profoundly grateful whenever I get the opportunity to dedicate an entire day to exploring new ideas and furthering my practice. To arrive at the studio without any U-Bahn delays and having cleaned my brushes the day prior is definitely an add-on, though.
Collect Bean: Where are you currently finding inspiration?
Jill Winnie Moser: By exploring the complexities of consumer culture and the power of advertising narratives. I am captivated by the juxtaposition of materialistic symbols with notions of wellness and health. For example, our perceptions of luxury cars are linked to vitality. Why and how do fast cars inherently imbue one with youthfulness and sex appeal? Super amusing.
Collect Bean: What is something that you do to stay focused?
Jill Winnie Moser: It sounds minor, but I started to periodically cut out sugar from my diet. It's life-changing. Every time I actually do find the willpower to do so, it pays off immensely by improving my productivity and general quality of life.
Collect Bean: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Jill Winnie Moser: I think she generally did a great job. But I would advise her to archive and document her works better. I can't find anything like this on my hard drive. Please, and thank you. Also, you definitely look better blonde; put the hair dye down, babe.
Collect Bean: What is one of your current goals as an artist?
Jill Winnie Moser: To further expand internationally. I always appreciate the opportunity to interact with a new audience. I gain a deeper understanding of my process and work through having others react to it. Rather than tying my practice to a specific city, I aspire for it to transcend geographical boundaries, floating around like a ghost. While my paintings may physically manifest in one location at a time, why not have the conceptual essence of my art "haunt" the globe? Also, I want to paint more sheep. They're cute.
