Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: What does growth mean to you?
James Isherwood: Growth challenges our boundaries of fear while embracing the unknown.
Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: What role does art play in society, and how does your work contribute to that?
James Isherwood: Societal expectations often warp the norms of human interaction. Artists are inherently seekers involved with upending various forms of communication, meaning, and interaction by posing oblique questions that may contradict what is presented to the viewer. The slowness of the paintings contributes to making time for narrative exploration and reflection.
Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: How do you see your artwork fitting into the larger art world or art history?
James Isherwood: My work is within the continuing conversation of contemporary landscape painting as a respite from the acceleration of information as experience.
Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
James Isherwood: Always be making no matter what is happening in the world.
Collect Bean x The Art Kollective: If you had to describe your work in only three words, what would they be?
James Isherwood: Color, reflection, details.
