Dimithry Victor

Dimithry Victor, a Haitian-born artist raised in Miami, initially developed a passion for art through cartoons and comic books, which evolved into a deep, self-expressive work shaped by his personal experiences. He currently focuses on figurative work incorporating portraiture, cartoons, and abstraction to amplify the experiences of marginalized communities, emphasizing the unique attributes that shape their identities. Using bright colors, texture, and strong narratives, he seeks to create a sense of visual empathy between viewers and his subjects. Victor's art has been showcased globally, with exhibitions in cities such as London, New York, and Miami.

Collect Bean: How do you think your work has evolved?

Dimithry Victor: Initially, I wanted to be a comic book illustrator so I could create stories with my work. As I developed my practice and began learning about other fine artists, I realized I could tell stories through the medium of painting. This motivated me to start creating work inspired by people's experiences in my community instead of focusing on fictional characters. Now, I use my work to give a voice to the voiceless.

Collect Bean: Where are you currently finding inspiration?

Dimithry Victor: I’ve been finding a lot of inspiration through books now. Children’s books, wildlife books, photography books, and design books have been helping me a lot lately.

Collect Bean: What role does color play in your practice?

Dimithry Victor: Color is everything to me. Understanding color theory has improved my practice tremendously and allows me to create new and interesting concepts.

Collect Bean: If you could be in a show with any artist, who would it be and why?

Dimithry Victor: I would love to be in a show with Titus Kaphar. He is one of my favorite artists and, in my opinion, one of the most creative when it comes to creating new concepts. His work is so captivating. I don’t think I would be the artist I am now without his work.

Collect Bean: If you had to describe your work in only three words, what would they be?

Dimithry Victor: Honest, dynamic, and colorful.
