Collect Bean: What is the kindest thing someone can tell you about your work?

Arlina Cai: The very best is when someone has an honest reaction to my work. Somebody once told me that she could feel the solitude and loneliness but also the hope and the peace in my work. That was really touching because I knew that there was something inside of her that my work was pulling out. Real connection is the sweetest thing and such an amazing feeling for any artist. It moves me to the point of tears sometimes.

Collect Bean: Tell us about a time when you felt you found your groove as an artist.

Arlina Cai: I started developing my style and felt more at ease when I decided to view art as play. This unlocked something within me and created the space to experiment more. I think this is also when I really broke away from figurative painting and fully embraced abstract art.

Collect Bean: Are there any recurring themes or motifs in your art, and if so, what do they represent to you?

Arlina Cai: I gravitate towards using the imagery of the eye. I used to paint portraits solely, and eyes were always my favorite to observe and portray.

I see the eyes as a symbol of consciousness and knowing. I like the idea that the paintings are alive and can look out at us softly. It creates a sense of presence between the viewer and the painting. I also view the eyes as protection, like they’re watching over us.

Collect Bean: What role does art play in society, and how does your work contribute to that?

Arlina Cai: I believe art’s role is to act as a mirror. I want my work to show a vision of what the world could be: soft, peaceful, and sensitive. I want to create a space where mystery thrives and where there is beauty in everything.

Collect Bean: If you had to describe your work in only three words, what would they be?

Arlina Cai: Calming, open, curious.
